Toll House

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries toll roads were very common, their owners charging for vehicles and animals to use the roads. This is the Steanor Bottom Toll House, on the road between Littleborough and Todmorden, opened in 1760. The house was built in 1824 to replace an earlier house at "Dog Isles." The house was due to be dismantled and moved elsewhere in the 1970s but was saved by the local civic trust. It is now a (very small) private house.

The price list for use of the road, published by JP & W Sutcliffe, Clerk to the County Trustees, can be seen here.
