Some Days

Newtongrange Lothian Brass Band

An old photograph on our band-hall wall.

Most of the players have been forgotten now, just a few names have come down to us.

It is interesting that in a time when most brass bands were calling themselves silver band, Newtongrange gave themselves a relatively modern title. Now the term silver band has almost disappeared except as in Newtongrange Silver Band, the modern day successors to this fine example of Scottish manhood.

There is no difference at all between brass and silver bands. Brass instruments come in two basic finishes, lacquered brass or nickel silver plated. The term silver band was adopted to improve the image of industrial, working-class brass.
