Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
T and I went to see Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. It was our 3rd time to see them perform and what a night it was. Everyone who came humpty-dumped, funky-chickened, mash-potatoed and boogalooed themselves into funk soul heaven. I ached for 2 days afterwards but hooo boy it was worth it.
As far as live performers go, Sharon Jones is hard to beat. She ticks all my boxes: fabulous voice, insane dancing, terrific rapport with the audience. I love the low fi tone of the Dap Kings. You may not have heard of them but you'll recognise their sound from many Amy Winehouse songs.
After the show, Sharon Jones mingled with her fans, signed CDs and vinyl records, and posed for pictures. There was a lot of love in the house for this big-hearted woman who worked as a corrections officer and an armoured car guard for many years before she made her musical breakthrough.
Concert shooting is a tricky business without tripods or flash, and with people jostling you, but I really liked this photo.
