Antique Blip Show
Calling any antique experts!
These rather rough looking little chaaracters belonged to my grandmother's spinster sister ,who after many years of being a private nursing sister to members of the aristocracy, found herself alone in the world in her late seventies, after the lady of the house died and the family estate was wound up.My gran brought her to live with us until she died several years later.(gran herself lived with us)
It is one of those stories I will never forget. We first met Aunt J, when my boyfriend(now hubby ) and I, were holidaying with mum, dad and gran ,in their caravan.Knowing Aunt J's plight, they had gone to Perthshire to meet this elderly relative.I was relatively young at the time but have never forgotten the sight of this frail, weary, figure hobbling over the sand dunes towards the caravan. It was such a sorrowful sight. Here was a real lady, who had devoted her life to caring for a family and who now found herself homeless and alone.
She never left our family's side again. My parents took pity on her and offered her a home with us.For all she had lived such a priveleged life, she adapted and fitted into our simple, working family lifestyle, with ease. She had so many wonderful stories to tell, had a wicked sense of humour , and I remember how much she loved and doted on the family pets, two black miniature poodles.
The saddest thing was , despite being able to have anything she desired, she had worked as an unpaid member of staff for all those years and when she arrived on our doorstep, she came with her world in a tiny walnut writing bureau -------an upmarket version of having her entire world in a carrier bag! For some reason, she had held on to these two matching figurines, which the family, we think, may have given to her while in service.
I always admired them because they were 'twinnies' and we of course had the twin girls. Our girls are mirror twins(everything about them is the oppositee.g. one right handed one left handed)and as babies, they used to sleep in identical foetal positions but facing in opposite directions. As a result of this, we labelled them our 'bookends.'So, you see these little figures, were of some significance .They are somewhat distressed in appearance and yet ,there is just something about them.Maybe it is no more than the memories we hold dear of Aunt J.
Had a quick attempt at trying to find out a little about our keepsakes but apart from the name and the fact that they were made in Austria , know little about how she came to have them. There is certainly no family connection with Austria.Maybe she salvaged them from the estate.
The name on the base is Goldscheia.Maybe some fellow Blippers with an interest in antiques might be able to shine a little light on the subject.Would love to find out why they were of such importance to her.
