Monte Palace Gardens

High over the city of Funchal is the village (well suburb) of Monte. Many tourists, especially cruise ship visitors, go to the top on the cable car.

In Monte there is a lovely church, a holy fountain, the famous toboggan rides, and the Monte Palace Gardens.

In the 18th century, Charles Murray, the British consul, bought a property and developed it into a beautiful estate. In 1897, it was purchased by Alfredo Guilherme Rodrigues who built a palatial mansion.

Today this is a spectacular garden with a charming museum - and spectacular views.

If you come to Madeira , don't miss this.
