Symmetry in the Cemetery - history near home
Well who knows what you will find if you deviate from your normal walking route! We live in a reasonably new suburb - about 6 years old - but the old "St John of God" hospital complex has been in the area for some time. There is a big church and some Gothic buildings, one currently being deconstructed presumably because of the earthquakes.
What I didn't know was that the complex was part of a movement that dates back to 1835 - "Foundation of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd Angers, France". They started a convent here in Aidenfield in 1885. The Sisters were "originally dedicated to helping women and girls who had fallen on hard times to recover their lives in locations of peace and relative isolation". This cemetery is the resting place of 244 women - some Sisters, some residents and some infants. The sisters left this site in 1967 which is when the Brothers of St John of God took over with a boys school and hospital. The cemetery is hidden behind a mound and bank which is why we hadn't seen it before.
This board is at the site.
