Asklepios

Today's the day ...................... to be healed

Went to see the newly refurbished Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Queen Street, Edinburgh today - and have to say we were impressed.

On the way there, we walked past the Royal College of Surgeons and couldn't help noticing this statue. He is the Greek god of healing - Asklepios, believed to be the son of Apollo and to have learned medicine from Chiron the centaur. He is holding a staff with a snake entwined round it. Patients wishing to be cured by the god visited his temple where he would heal them as they slept.

I think it was just the way he was standing - that made us laugh. A statue with real attitude ..................
