Gathering of the swans

I was lucky to witness the most unexpected nature-phenomenon in the heart of Amsterdam. Tens of Swans (cygnus olor) gathered in to a narrow canal in a rainy evening. I just wonder if they do it on a regular basis in certain circumstances. Canals were full of them. Where did they come from? I have never heard about these parties! Wish I had a pro-camera with me!
