Rock solid

There have been many changes in Peterborough, the town where I grew up - some for the better and some not so good, but this beautiful building remains a constant. This is the awe-inspiring west front of Peterborough Cathedral on which building started in Norman times, nigh on 1000 years ago.
The cathedral was built from stone taken from the ground a few miles away and floated down the River Nene on barges. As the building grew taller, they hauled the great chunks of stone up on pulleys, some of which can still be seen today in the roof. It's the jewel in the crown of my city and will be standing long after I have gone - probably for another 1000 years at least.

PS This image had parallax distortion which I was able to correct with an amazing app in Photoshop Elements 10 called Key Distortion. Trouble, in doing so, it cut the top off the towers slightly. Must remember to leave more room at the top with buildings like this in future...
