Mt. Hood and the Oregon City Falls

Another amazing clear day today in Portland, although the east wind was howling most of the day. Often times when we get a high pressure area over us, with a low off shore, we get that east wind.

I was able to get a shot of Mt. Hood today and the Oregon City Falls, both in the same shot. Since we had some record rainfall several weeks ago, the rivers are still very high and the falls are too! Not as spectacular as it may be during lower water levels, and definitely brown, but still a beautiful sight.

The Oregon City Falls were once known as Willamette Falls (named after the river) and was an early site of an Indian salmon fishing village. The falls furnished the power for a lumber mill which began in 1842, a flour mill in 1844, and a woolen mill in 1864. Then it did the same for a paper mill which started in 1867. Oregon City, which you see in the surrounding area, was the first incorporated city west of the Mississippi River, established by Dr. John McLoughlin, so the area has a rich history as far as Oregon goes.
