A Bonnie Day

A fine day today, a bonnie day.
Calm seas and a whisper of a breeze.
Sun shining from an arctic blue sky,
The light cold, clear and blue
A special light in these northern shores
Illuminating the low slung landscape
And the boundless water.

Warm temperatures,
Almost like summer
Too many clothes
No need for a hat, gloves or scarf
In fact no need for a coat.

The crocuses are in bloom,
And the snowdrops too.
But no life in the trees,
Stunted and sturdy
To withstand the gales.

Two sparrows sit on a bush outside,
Basking in the warmth.
There's a feeling of spring in the air,
But maybe tmorrow there will be wind
And rain or snow.
Weather in Shetland has it's own agenda,
Keeping us guessing.

The boats lie at peace, in the harbour,
Only the ferry to Bressay moves,
Plying back and forth across the channel.
Our big boat to Aberdeen is in dock
Waiting to take us home.

I could live here, a Shetlander
With the sea on my doorstep
Happy to fight the elements
While cherishing the good days.
Content with nature as it comes.
