Bank House

Taken on the way to U3A geology group this evening, the dome of the Headquarters of Scotland's oldest bank on the Mound, The Bank of Scotland, as seen from George IV Bridge in evening light.

Initiated while Henry Dundas, Viscount Melville (1742 - 1811), was Governor of the Bank it was built in 1806 by architects Robert Reid (1774 - 1856) and Richard Crichton. This building was extended by David Bryce (1803 - 76) in the 1860's with side wings, each topped by domes, and together with a grand replacement of the central copper-clad dome (inspired by the dome of Karlskirche in Vienna) created the grade A listed building we see today.
