Outdoor Cinema

Summer in Perth is traditionally very hot and we all seek some form of relief in the evenings.

One way the film goers enjoy is to take a picnic tea to the Somerville Auditorium located in the grounds of the University of Western Australia.

The outdoor Somerville Auditorium was the brainchild of historian and foundation member of the Senate of the University of Western Australia, William Somerville.

Picnicking on the lawns has become a traditional part of the pre-film entertainment and is a great way to soak up the ambience. We attended last night, it rained a little due to a few passing storms. This only made for a few creative moments where we kept dry under golf umbrellas.

The pines create a fantastic setting for the 1000 deck chairs that take us back to the good old days when Perth had many outdoor cinemas, all but a few have since disappeared.

I went back today to take a few photos and of course found it completely empty. It made for some interesting moments trying to capture the real atmosphere of the Auditorium
