Banksia

The Banksia genus was first described and named in April 1772.

The genus name honours the English botanist Sir Joseph Banks, who collected the first Banksia specimens in 1770, during James Cook's first expedition to Australia.

Banksia belongs to the family Proteaceae, subfamily Grevilleoideae. There are around 170 species. All but one of the living Banksia species are endemic to Australia.

They are found in abundance along our Western Australian coastline. In this case they are in a native garden of a nearby neighbor to whom I had to explain why I was 10 feet into his gardens taking these photos...
