Little Chapel

In the morning Laura, Roger and I went to see the Victor Hugo house in St. Peter Port - the house which Victor Hugo bought and lived in for 13 years, during his exile from France. The house is as he left it, decorated in his own unique style - after he returned to France, he left it to his family, and they later gave it to the City of Paris, and it is run by them today! We returned to the hotel to meet up with Jen and Jason, who had been walking on the cliffs, and together went to the small shipwreck museum at Fort Gre, colloquially known as 'the cup and saucer'.

After lunch, Roger wanted to go to one of his favorite beaches on the islands - Petit Port - you have to check the tides if you want to go there, as the sand is totally covered at high tide. To get there, you have to go down about 300 steps down the cliffs. Roger and Laura were daft enough to go in the water, (Brrr!) albeit somewhat briefly, while I took pictures and Jen and Jason read. Then we went to the Little Chapel - one of the smallest chapels in the world, entirely decorated inside and out with broken pieces of china, glass pebbles and shells. The work was begun in 1913 by Brother Deodat, whose plan was to create a miniature version of the grotto and basilica of Lourdes in France. His first two attempts, he destroyed, the first due to criticism, and the second because the Bishop couldnt pass through the doorway!!
