Bird Hide

In its short life, our bird hide has been the scene of many quiet hours of enjoyment, picnics, meditation and even romance. It was a refuge for my husband when he needed a breather from looking after me, so peaceful and relaxing.

Our son built it on the edge of the spring-fed pond not long after we'd moved here, probably the best joint birthday present we ever received. The log frame is made from trees coppiced from our own garden, covered in camouflage tarpaulin with camouflage net for the window and works a treat. Harvey hewed a log into the shape of a bench [note how carefully I worded that!].

Probably our favourite spottings are woodpeckers, both green and spotted, and the finches which hang upside down on the handy thistles later in the year. In Spring, moor hens nest here but are very secretive. Have to wait in silence for ages to spot a chick.

Sadly the winter winds have played havoc with the hide and Harvey is up there today repairing it's leaking roof and one shredded wall. Bit of a make-do-and-mend, but with the home-made theme of its origins. Fun.

Oh yes, nearly forgot, and this is the view from the hide, with the spring-fed pond up close, full of reeds, and in the distance the winter pond of previous blips.
