Good Advice?
We have an 1831 copy of Culpeper's Herbal on our shelves that Paula inherited from her uncle. It's a beautiful book with lots of handcoloured illustrations. However, the bonus was this piece of paper that we found folded amongst the pages. Not only did it contain these recipes in fantastic copperplate handwriting, but on the other side of the paper an unkown person had written written sage pieces of advice for each month of the year.
Should you need it, January's advice is "For your health keep your body warm, let good diet and wholesom be your Physition & rather with exercise than sauce measure your appetite"
July's is: "Abstain from all Physic. bleed not but upon violent occasions, & neither meddle with wine, women nor wantonefs"
Whoever wrote it may not have been much fun, but they had excellent handwriting.
