Our life in the Borders

Free Polish Airforce

Following the fall of Poland at the beginning of the Second World War, many Polish airmen escaped to Britain. They were skilled and daring pilots and made a considerable contribution to the defense of the UK. Many of them were stationed in Scotland. Several camps were located in the Peebles area, particularly in the grounds of Peebles Hydro.

There is now a memorial, looking out over the Border hills, commemorating the the Polish achievements and the ongoing relationship between the Scottish and Polish peoples.
