weird seed head

What on earth is this?

It's on a tree I've seen many times but this is the first time I've noticed the seed head.

As far as I could see it was the only one, there were a couple of smaller paler softer ones but this was the only mature one.

I like this better as a photo but got another snap that I think shows the head better - check out my photostream on flickr
