best meal so far

This is Sarah, the third Clinton-schooler in the group. She's probably has the kindest heart of any volunteer I've met so far, but sure does love to play the "who-can-give-more-attitude" game.

Ten of us spent the afternoon in the townships today, at Mzoli's - the coolest butchery I've ever encountered, and probably the biggest business among all the shanty-cities. In the fifty yards approaching the building, sheep, cows, and chickens all make a quick transition from pens to chopping blocks to refrigerated cases inside, and for about 300 Rand (~40 bucks), we picked out a boatload of it. They then bbq'd the whole lot right in front of us and served it up in big buckets on the picnic tables outside. Whole coils of sausage, half chickens, lamb chops only two people could possibly finish - it was probably the freshest meat I've ever tasted. That combined with Seychelle's homemade potato salad and another 200 Rand worth of beer and wine, and we were in business. Ten people, sixty-five bucks! To our added delight, a pickup truck with a big TV screen in the back rolled up just before 3p and blasted the Kaiser Chiefs/ Manchester United game, which was another experience in itself. About two hundred people showed up to watch the game in carnivorous splendor, and they cheered as if their club was fighting for the world cup. Before this adventure is over, I might just be a full-blooded soccer fan.
