Fingers flying,
Drawing yarn into stitches.

Cast on, cast off,
Knit 2, purl 2.
Garter stitch, stocking stitch,
Moss stitch, cablestitch, rib.

A language learned at a mother's knee
Understood by some
Foreign to others.

A timeless craft
Practised through the ages
By women and men alike,
Housewives and fisherfolk
Creating a fabric
Rich in patterns of colour
And texture, universal
In shawls and socks
Jerseys and ganzies
Hats and scarves
From Fair Isle to Mexico.
