Stonemason's skill
I have had a really interesting day today. This afternoon I met with a friend and colleague who I am starting a business with to discuss our plans for the coming months.
This evening we had a talk by the Project Manager who was responsible for the schedule of work on the Millennium Tower of the Bury St Edmunds Cathedral. In the 1970's there was insufficient funding to complete the tower. With funds from an anonymous donation and a Lottery Grant it was possible to complete the tower in 2003. It looks splendid and having grown up in the town and watched as the 98 miles of scaffolding and plastic sheeting were assembled, it was always a mystery as to what it would look like once completed.
It was so interesting to hear about the tendering process, finding the correct stone and lime mortar and overall craftsmanship. The stonemasons used traditional methods throughout and have left a fantastic legacy for all the townspeople to be proud of.
This stone is similar to one of the top stones of the pinnacles and was very beautiful especially to touch as it was incredibly smooth.
