Gorse at Knettishall Heath
The Suffolk Wildlife Trust are trying to raise £100k during January to buy Knettishall Heath which is an area of breckland near Thetford. We went for a lovely walk there today as we are supporting this very worthy cause.
There is quite a history to Knettishall Heath as for many centuries rabbits maintained the short species-rich turf and patches of ground which many plants and animals depend on. Rabbits were an important part of the breckland economy. With the impact of myxomatosis in the 1950's rabbits died in their millions. As a result scrub and bracken have spread into the open heath and without some action many Breckland species will be lost. Suffolk Wildlife Trust are hoping to raise enough money to buy the land and to introduce Exmoor ponies to maintain the landscape.
Well worth a wander.
