3D or not 3D? That is the question...
This blip is of a projector showing Charlie Chaplin as I queued for the cinema in Bradford to see Hugo. A lovely film, about the wonder and magic of cinema from its early days. I chose to watch it in 3-D as the reviews had all raved about the fabulous opening sequence in the 3D version. Now I'm not a great fan of 3D and this afternoon's experience confirmed my opinion.
I can't help feeling that it's too tricksy and gets in the way of letting you immerse yourself in the film. Shots often appear to have been set up solely with the intention of showing off the 3D trick, sometimes it works, but mostly it just reminds you that you're in a cinema, 3D snow falling is a case in point*. But my main bugbear with it is that the focus is just all wrong. We just don't see 3D objects in that way! The edges don't blur in real life, and the film version simply ends up with objects looking like they've been cut out.
Anyway if you like film and have a passing knowledge of silent movies you will probably enjoy the film, but I would recommend you see it without the modern day shenanigans.
* The real stuff was falling on the way home!
