Tricolored Heron, Reflected
We were at Wakodahatchee Wetlands, near Boynton Beach. We arrived about 9:30,and this was virtually the first bird I saw. It was about the last shot I took before a group of blue-winged teal arrived and totally ruined the reflection. Enjoy it large--especially the plumage.
The Tricolored Heron (Egretta tricolor) was formerly known as the Louisiana Heron. It's quite common along the coast in Florida and further west. We saw many today--they are mostly very active, but like all herons they can rest immobile when they choose to, as here (usually lurking for prey).
In the afternoon the highlight was a family of bobcats (mother and 4 cubs) at Green Cay Wetlands, not far away. We were late arriving and they were in dismally low light under trees--we'll return tomorrow, and hopefully I can get something better than I got today.
