Road rage

One of the features about being in Phnom Penh is its terrible and death defying traffic. This doesn't capture it well at all (I was leaning out of a tuk tuk en route to the airport) but trust me when I say that I've braced in preparation for crashing probably every time I've ventured onto these roads.

It is every road user for him or herself. The only general principle is that you get out of the way of stuff bigger than yourself. The Cambodian temperament usually means that road rage is rare. Imagine the indignation in the UK if a tuk tuk was to come careering towards you on the wrong side of the road while you scuttled along the (non-existent) pavement. Or if motorbikes zipped across 4-way junctions without braking, looking or caring.

Although I could have got a much better photo, I like the moto driver standing here, looking as though he is protesting against having to come to a rare halt at the novelty of some traffic lights. I think he's actually trying to stop the sun blinding him.

My employer will be happy that I'm leaving Cambodia - I may have been invalidating our insurance policy every time I've ridden one of those motorbikes!
