Its glacier time!!
Today we got up early as we were being picked up at 9am to begin our journey to Perito Moreno glacier. Breakfast was much better at this hostel compared to the one in Mendoza, we even had the luxury of a toaster and jam!
The journey to the glacier didn't take too long, about an hour max. At the first sighting of the glacier the bus went crazy with people trying to catch it all on camera. However, looking back the view wasn't really that impressive at all compared to standing on the balconies directly opposite the glacier.
We were left on the glacier balconies for 2 hours, free to walk around the different view points. It felt so surreal as we sat opposite the glacier on a bench eating lunch. I literally could have sat there all day, especially with it being such a sunny day. The most incredible part for me was the sound created when a piece broke off the glacier. It sounded like a volcano erupting (not that I've ever heard a volcano erupting but it's definitely what I imagine it to be like).
After that we took a boat ride across to the actual glacier itself and walked to the tents where we were given crampons to walk on the ice. The boat ride was freezing! It took a while for the group to get sorted with crampons and then we began our hike up the glacier. It was so strange walking with such heavy equipment on my feet and because you had to keep your feet flat it looked like we were performing some sort of march along the ice!
We stopped at various points to look at crevices, water pools, to fill our water bottles with the chilled fresh glacier water and at the end we even got to enjoy some alfajors and Scottish whiskey served with a lot of glacier ice!! To top it all off I returned to the hostel in time for the all you can eat BBQ which included Argentine steak, chorizo, chicken and lots of different potatoes and veggies, which seem to lack in the diet in Buenos Aires. It was a truly amazing day!
