A candle in the window

God bless America. You often find a sense of the good things of Colonial life - even though like everywhere it is subjected to commercial pressure.

Although there are other cultural references, in Colonial USA the candle in the window represented the warmth and security of the family hearth, and loyalty to family members not present in the home. For example, in the Civil War it had significance for those young men off to battle.

The reason for this blip is much more prosaic - but I won't spoil a good story with the prosaic!
