Breast Cancer Awareness

I was walking home from university when I spotted this sticker on a car in the neighbourhood. Since October is national breast cancer awareness month and this is the last day of October, I decided to post this photo. Here are the 2011 breast cancer statistics for women in the United States. This information was obtained by the Susan G. Komen website.

?There will be 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer (includes new cases of primary breast cancer among survivors, but not recurrence of original breast cancer among survivors).
?There will be 57,650 new cases of in situ breast cancer (includes ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) and lobular carcinoma in situ (LCIS), of those, about 85 percent were DCIS). DCIS is a non-invasive breast cancer and LCIS is a risk factor that increases the risk of invasive breast cancer. Learn more about DCIS and breast cancer risk. Learn more about LCIS and breast cancer risk.
?There will be 39,520 breast cancer deaths.

While the rate of breast cancer is highest among women, it does not mean men are immune. Breast cancer is rare, but does occur in men, too.

?There will be 2,140 new cases of breast cancer.
?There will be 450 breast cancer deaths.

There are several simple preventative things women and men can do. These include, monthly self-examination, yearly mammograms for women over 40, and yearly clinical examinations by a healthcare provider. Knowing your risks is also helpful.
