Halloween Hugankiss style.
A pumpkin totem to watch over my little cottage featuring, from top down - just in case you can't work it out:
One of my chickens, me, my dog, my cat.
I have mostly very fond memories of Halloween, although it was far less commercialised back in the day.
We used to make a lantern from a large swede - that's the vegetable, not a native of Sweden. They are so much more difficult to hollow out without severing the odd digit or two than the pumpkins we have today - Thats the swede, not the aforementioned tall blond hunk from Scandanavia.
I shall never forget, as an adult, when a friend decided to throw a Halloween themed birthday party for her son.
"Mandy, I've got 20 seven year old boys coming to A's party, I just don't know how I'll manage." She called to say, "Could you possibly stay and help out?"
"Yes, no problem." I replied.
I dressed up as a witch, adding several jumpers tied round my waist to make me look fat - much, much, fatter. Face covered in make up, pointy hat & bissum broom, the full flippin works.
"Oh Mandy!" You've dressed up!" My friend said.
She was wearing a cocktail dress and heels! Alarm bells started ringing at this point!
She explained the party was going to be in 'The Rumpus Room,' a huge shed like construction in the garden.
Somehow, and I still really don't understand how, I was left in the garden shed with 20 boys while my friend and several other glamorous mums stayed in her lovely house drinking bubbly and nibbling canapés.
After the designated 2 hours of party games including ducking for apples and eating do-nuts off hanging strings the remaining yummy mummies arrived to collect their now rather grubby boys, and I was invited into the house to join them all for a glass of wine, the bubbly having been consumed earlier.
Hot, sweaty, sticky and streaked witches make-up, I could handle, even having MUG stamped invisibly on my forehead, but having all those women thinking I was so fat was almost too much for me to handle.
Enjoy your trickeries and treaterings this evening!
