A ridiculous man's dream

Milk and Cheese

Soviet shops always had the produce behind the counter, arranged on the wall. Most of the space of the shop was just open, with nothing in it except angry old women.

It made service incredibly slow, since you had to ask the server for every individual item (often several times, when she gets the wrong one). Some shops also have separate counters for different sections, meaning that you have to go round making several separate purchases.

Western-style shops - which require enough trust to let people touch the produce before they pay for it - are very common, but this old style is still present, especially in the provinces but even in the capital.
