Growing & Eating

Compare & Contrast

I've just got back from being away for a few days. Both of these courgettes were grown on the same date from the same packet.

The plant on the left was hardened off then transplanted under polythene while the plant on the right it was repotted but kept in the greenhouse.

The difference was water and shade - I think. The greenhouse plants were watered once in the last 5 days but kept in the shade to save it getting scorched while the plant under the poly was left with no shade or ventilation. The weather has been unusually hot and dry for the last six weeks.

While the plants in the greenhouse look healthy enough they still haven't produced any flowers while the poly boys have already lost some flowers but no embryonic fruits.
(Courgettes tend to produce a first flush of male flowers, which means you can eat them and still not loose any fruits)

So a good watering was the first thing on thing on the agenda. I've not even had a cup of tea yet
