Operation
It was Louis' ear operation today. I took the day off work and we made our way to the hospital for 7:30. Louis coped really well with not being allowed to eat or drink. The operation went OK although they didn't put a grommet in his apparently bad ear due to it already being perforated but they did put one in his good ear. We only found out he had a good ear and a bad ear last week when he was tested again. We are wondering if he has benefited at all but we can only do what we think is the right thing. Hopefully we will find out more in his follow up appointments.
We are a bit disappointed with the ward as we felt very much like they had forgotten about him. He was out of his operation by 11am, was given a small drink and that was it until we were able to go home which ended up being 3:30. When we asked for the second time if we could go we were asked if he had eaten anything yet. Our thoughts were that he might have if he was offered something. It would have been nice to be told they could have ordered him some food and that there was a relatives room we could use for drinks etc. but he wasn't and we weren't. Next time we need to be more pushy I think.
Just like his last op when he had a hernia treated at 8 months, I got choked and really had to hold back the tears when he was put under. I tell myself this is silly as I know parents who go through far worse ops but watching him looking around wondering what's happening and then being injected and going to 'sleep' really got to me. It was when was prompted to kiss him goodbye that I welled up. Anyway, he was a very brave boy and I'm very proud of how he coped with it all.
It was a long day because in the evening we had to go to the open evening at the Kings High School. This is where Alana will most likely be going. It was also my old school and it was so weird wondering around. So many memories. I was surprised at how little it had changed. We are confident that it's a good school and Alana seems to like it too. It's really weird your own kids going to the same school as you did. They grow up so fast.
