Mystery mail box

I had an appointment in Sydney today and did get up at 5am to go down with my husband who needed to go down to Sydney so, so early.

He dropped me at a convenient railway station and I caught a train then bus to my daughter's home. I arrived around 8.30am. Spent some time lying on the floor playing trains with my grandchildren (the old bones don't really like lying on the floor anymore).

Next we went to the park to play on the equipment and of course that game of football ... oh dear!!! ...my 5 year old just loves to get poor old me on the ground or run for the try line just too fast for me to catch him!!.

After returning the two grandchildren back to their Mum and 2 week old L, I had to make my way to my 2pm appointment in the city.

Of course there was a hold up at the hospital and I sat in the waiting room for over 2 hours.

At 4.15pm the appointment was finally over and the rush was on ... I had to catch a train home ... a 2 1/2 hour trip. The bus came which took me to Sydney Central Railway station ..... there I spotted this mail box as I ran past. I stopped , blipped and ran on but didn't really look closely at this big red box.

I caught the train OK and arrived home at 7.30pm. What a day!!! I'm rather tired.

BUT what is this box?
I now notice that the front base has been cut off.
I notice that there is a plaque attached.

Guess who will have to make another trip to this box next time I go to Sydney, just to find out what it is all about and why it is where it is?

Maybe some Sydneysider blippers know more about it.
