The Adventures of Pippin

Windfall

After the hurricane giving us all that wind at the beginning of the week, Pippin decided to make herself useful today and collect all the apples that fell off the apple tree. She is sitting under it here, and I've been singing that "Don't sit under the apple tree" song by The Andrews Sisters all day as a result.

This picture was actually taken by my Mum, as in all the ones I took, Pippin was making funny faces again. She was very obliging though, and did sit for a very long time wondering why she wasn't allowed to move!

So, the apples are actually Cox's Orange Pippins which, as anyone who has ever read Danny the Champion of the World will know, are the best ones there are. There's a whole description in there about them, and they are my favourite - hence Pippin's name.

We actually got the tree before we got her. It was how we filled the gap between dogs after beautiful Topaz, our beagle died.

Anyway, it didn't have a very good year last year. This year it was doing really well and I had high hopes for the apple crop - until that blasted hurricane swept by. There are still a few on the tree, but it was very disappointing that so many fell off.

I expect they will be a bit tart, but I'm hoping my Mum will make apple crumble with the ones Pippin gathered up. I'm sure if we mix them with some ripe ones and add a lot of sugar, it'll be delicious!
