Thursday: Strand Station

Still on my course but finishing tomorrow.  I have to admit that, as courses go, it has been pretty tiring but enough about that!

This is the old Aldwych underground station on The Strand.  Don't be fooled by the fact that it says 'Strand' -  it was only known as that between 1907-1915.  Thereafter it was Aldwych. It closed permanently in 1994 - in fact, as I was taking this picture some fella told me that he remembered when it was still open.  Actually, so do I but I didn't want to tell him that.

Disused parts of the station and the running tunnels were used during both World Wars to shelter artworks from London's public galleries and museums from the threat of bombing. It is also a popular film location.

It is also said to be haunted with numerous people claiming to have seen a ghost.  The ghost is believed to be an actress as Aldwych used to be on the site of the old Royal Strand Theatre.  Spook!!

Off to the pub quiz tonight with Goatee.  He is pretty good on music....I'll let you know tomorrow how we get on.
