Sagunt

We took the train from Valencia to Sagunt in the north, mainly to see the castle on top of the hill overlooking the town.

The site dates from the fifth century BC and it was added to in successive generations. It is a spectacular place, with substantial archaeological remains, and offers an equally amazing view of the whole region.

However, I couldn't help thinking that those responsible for the site could do a little better at explaining their treasures and caring for them. There was virtually no information available about the castle, and 'restoration' work had been carried out in a couple of areas - notably to a Roman amphitheatre - that was more like a wholesale rebuild.

For me, that destroys the true significance of archaeological remains. If they are replaced with completely new walls and steps, they might as well have grassed over the place instead.

Nevertheless, enough archaeology remains to keep this a truly special place and it will live long in the memory.
