An Old Airman's Life

SMU Mustangs

I would love to say that fall is in the air. It ain't. At least not in Texas. But one sure sign that summer is about over is when football begins. Cowboys. Texas. A&M. TCU. SMU. Southern Methodist University.

Everyday, I ride through the SMU campus to get to work. I took some classes at the seminary there a few years ago so I am sort of an alum. On my ride this morning, I saw a man on a crane with a video camera I taking videos of the team practicing. I stopped and snapped what I could of the new stadium and field. The players getting ready to start a new season. Today all teams are tied for first place. SMU has been working towards a respectable team. Because they didn't play fair in the 1980's, they were were given what was known as the Death Penalty. They could not play intercollegiate football for many years. Obviously the death penalty was not that. The team was resurrected and has struggled. A few years ago, they hired away the head coach from the University of Hawaii. Everybody seems to like him, but we will have to wait to see if he wins. Not just win but WINS. Mediocre football is not condoned in Texas. That is what got them in trouble before.

I wish SMU well. I wish we could keep collegiate athletics amateur, but with all the money that football programs generate, I am being naive.
