Some Days

My Bass

If I had had a clear idea of how this blip was going to end up, I could have zoomed-in a bit closer with my big lens, and zoomed less in "trimming." As it is, you can still see quite a lot of gannets, and decent detail on Bass Rock. This picture was taken from the coast road with the island being some three miles off into the Firth of Forth.

You can clearly see the path above the lighthouse. This goes across the top to the enormous foghorn on the seaward side of the island.

The path starts at a (locked) gate below the lighthouse, goes through a high-roofed tunnel and up to the light via the old prison buildings. After the lighthouse some steps go up to the left and then the path leads diagonally towards the top right of the picture. It passes the old chapel and the famous keeper's vegetable garden (some of the wall can be seen as a dark structure above and slightly left of the lighthouse).

The veg garden itself is in a slight hollow surrounded by a low wall to keep the gannets out. Gannet chicks don't learn to fly until after they hurl themselves off into the sea, and they can't climb walls, so the parents never (even now that the island is deserted) nest in the garden!
