Milk and Horses

Times are changing. In earlier times Terschellinger grass-land was for cows only. Cattle was outside and was milked outside twice a day. Modern farming is something completely different. It is not economical to let cattle outside anymore or to milk them outside. The result is that you hardly see cows anymore outside. The stay inside big stables and computers checks every day the exact amount of milk they are producing. The same computer scans their earmarks every time they want to eat and decides how much food every cow gets in order to maximize their milk production. Everything is automated and the grass-land is only for getting legally rid of the barn manure. Only big milk producing farms survived and on a small island like Terschelling it is very hard to survive with a small scale milk farm. Therefore a lot of land is occupied by horses or sheep as you can see on this picture taking in the early morning hours.
