Chloe on the wall at Maryport
After yesterday's excitement I thought Chloe had better have a slightly more urban walk today. This is the wall at Maryport. I am not sure about its history. You can see that the pavement is made of huge red sandstone slabs and that it is some way from sea, so perhaps not a sea wall...or had the sea changed its course since the wall was built? Maryport is a seaport, originally called Ellenport because the river Ellen ran into the sea there. Well, the Ellen still does but a Mr Stenhouse changed the name of the port in honour of his wife (who was called Mary, obviously!)
He also gentrified the town quite a bit so perhaps the walkway Chloe is beside was intended for ladies and gentlemen to air themselves on. The sandstone is quite soft so there are names and some designs carved into it. One is a carving of a ship in sail so perhaps that gives a clue as to when it was built. The earliest date I could see was 1947 but there were not many dates and because the stone is quite soft they may have worn away with people walking on them.
