Hachijo-Fuji San

This is a view of Hachijo-Fuji San taken from Mihara San on Hachijojima in Japan. I climbed Mihara San again today (720m) and got a good view of Hachijo-Fuji. I will hike to summit and do caldera walk of Hachijo-Fuji San (854m) either tomorrow or Sunday! Mihara is much older extinct volcano and formed 25,000 years ago and therefore has rich and thick soil. This is why Mihara is covered in deep rainforest. Hachijojima-Fuji formed only 10,000 years ago and is still active but dormant. The soil of Hachijo-Fuji is not thick so only the foot of the volcano up to about 200m has deep forests. The other 650m is mostly aloe, bushes, bamboo and grasses. The last of the three volcanos of this island is Hachijo-koshima which is off shore volcano of 610m and formed 8,000 years ago. It erupted last in Edo Era and since then has been abandoned. Interestingly, archaeologists found old skeletons and artifacts from 8,000 years ago, from Jomon Era. Maybe these ancient people witnessed the birth of Hachijojima!
