Cuddy: Old Scots meaning "horse"

In a charter of 1823 a piece of land was set aside to build a school for Morningside Village on the southern outskirts of Edinburgh. Pupils came to the school from as far distant as Swanston and Lothianburn. If the large enrolment at the South Morningside School when it was opened in 1892 gives a clue, the two small classrooms here must have been full to overflowing.

Pupils coming from a distance would park their horses beside the school.... Hence, "Cuddy Lane".
