Culloden
- Backblip -
Taken from the rooftop of the new visitors' centre, on a glorious sunny day. We timed our visit well, taking in the excellent displays and then a guided tour of the Battlefield at noon.
This is the site of the last battle fought on British soil. 16 April 1746 and over 1,200 dead within the hour. Most of those killed were supporting the Jacobite cause led by Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Government troups only lost around 50 men. The large memorial cairn was erected in 1881 along with the single stones marking the clan burial mounds.
We went on from here to Fort George on the Moray Firth, making it a grand day out of history revision.
