The nuthatch and the nutwoman
Our feeder/swing* hangs well above eye level, even for me, at 6'. You'd think we'd give it some thought when hanging it, but not so much. Whenever I want a good look at a bird on it I have to jump in the air which makes for incredibly crappy photos and awkward neighbourly moments. It also freaks out the birds.
Today I dragged a planter onto the lawn, yelled at all the earwigs falling out, climbed on it and pretended to be a tree. A very hot, sweaty tree, but a tree nonetheless.
They didn't buy it.
I stood.
And stood.
And sweated profusely.
And stood some more.
And after what seemed like hours, one single (white-breasted) nuthatch showed up, giving me incredulous looks.
I figured I'd count my losses and be done for the day.
*depending on whether you are a bird or a squirrel.
