Flying fox

Gayndah is a town under threat from a colony of flying foxes that have decided to take over trees along the Burnett River, adjacent to a hotel and motel.

The Burnett river flooded in January, and this is now creating problems with noise and if I may say so, smell. This video shows how bad the problem is.

The Hendra Virus has been found to be carried in 30% of flying foxes and is very lethal to horses and humans, and at the moment there have been several outbreaks across Queensland.

It is terrible to think that this colony could affect the local horse population, and their owners. Sadly even vets become at risk of dying from the virus if they have treated infected horses.

It was impossible to reflect the noise, chaos and movement of the flying foxes in one image. So glad I went down to see where they are.
