Never mind the Big Society ...

Today's blip is a far cry from my previous ones. It marks something of a milestone for me.
For years I've been trying to get hold of material by the Great Society, the band that 'amazing' Grace Slick performed with in her days prior to joining Jefferson Airplane. The band was formed by Grace with her then hubby Jerry Slick and his brother Derby (who, rather than Grace herself, is the Slick to whom their iconic track White Rabbit is accredited - it was Derby, not Grace, who wrote it). OK, OK! Yes, I AM a bit of an anorak where Grace/Airplane are concerned. I hold my hands up to that one. Guilty!
Shopping in a well know supermarket I came across a 4-CD compilation called Pure Psychedelic Rock. Just £5! On it are tracks by the Airplane (2), Beefheart (2), The Byrds (2), Melanie (2), Santana (2), Edgar & Johnny Winter and whole load of other great stuff. Right up my street. And there, nestled on one of the CDs, is a Great Society track! So this morning I played it. My first ever hearing of the band that launched the voice which eventually became a mainstay of the Airplane! At last. It even turned out to be a live recording (from their Matrix gigs?). So much like a rough, embryonic version of the Airplane (although they already existed when the GS were together). And with some lovely flute work, an instrument never used within the Airplane. But THAT voice is unmistakeable and already soaring and swooping, just as it would go on to do with Messrs Kantner, Balin, Kaukonen, etc.
Sometimes things are just worth waiting for.
So that's why my blip today shows a CD and part of its cover.
I really MUST try to get hold of some more GS stuff.
