No contest!
We were doing an activity about which parts of plants we eat in the lovely, wood-panelled mansion library at Wakehurst this afternoon when we finally got our thunderstorm!
My limp lettuce leaves, stumpy carrots and squishy tomatoes couldn't compete with the lightning, of course. There were lots of 'Ooohs' and 'Aaahs' (from both the children and adults!) and the occasional scream as the lights flickered, so it was very exciting!
Much as I would have loved to have got a shot of some lightning, there really was no hope of that so here is a little fellow we saw on our journey around the garden in the morning. I'm pretty sure it's a male black-tailed skimmer (Orthetrum cancellatum) but am happy to be corrected. Not a great shot but it came out better than I expected and his little 'face' made me laugh - almost looks like a cartoon bug!
