Jarlshof Wheelhouse
Jarlshof was discovered in 1897 after a storm blew away the sand which had buried the site, at the southern end of Mainland Shetland.
The oldest remains date back to bronze and early iron age, part of the site has been eroded by the sea, including part of the broch. There are remains of several houses similar to those of Skara Brae on Orkney, as wheelhouses. with later evidence of a bronze smith.
We then went to Sumburgh Head Lighthouse watching puffin fulmars and guillemots nesting on the clifffs.
From there we drove to Scatness and walked along rocky paths to the Ness of Burgi Blockhouse which at 2000 years old is similar drystone construction to the brochs but low and longitudinal in shape.
Time then to find our accommodation, up at Bixter. (Ok, then, at Twatt) and very comfortable it proved to be.
