Five things

River deep. Mountain high.

1. Up at 5.30, out the door by 6.20, fed up with the radio by 7. I love a big trip though. It's early but there's laughs.

2. By 8.30am we are at the Cairngorm Mountain Centre - way up high. This is the start line (and the finish line) of the race Colin is cycling in today. This is him, just before he sets off on a hundred miles through mountain and glen and moor and town.

3. I spend the day happy in my own company wandering round the countryside, stopping in at towns that seem nice, eating well, shopping when necessary and generally being pretty pleased with the day. I find a deli with a great stock and treat Colin to a pork pie for the finish line, some chilli sauce from an extensive range and a great big steak pie. The phrase Arsenic mousse is used by one of the butchers which makes us all laugh out loud.

4. Back up to the finish line and I wait. I love clapping folk over a line - having been on the other side, I know what it means. It means a lot and it doesn't matter how experienced you are, everyone needs a cheer when they deserve it.

5. When Colin comes over the line we're straight to the cafe for a bowl of chilli and a pint before heading home. My hero.
